Droid RAZR MAXX First Impressions and Unboxing Video

The Droid RAZR is just months old, but Motorola has already seen fit to introduce another mmber to the RAZR family, the Droid RAZR MAXX.

The Droid RAZR (review) was known for a super thin design and Kevlar back, but it lacked in the battery life department. We saw 11-12 hours of battery life in our Droid RAZR review, which was decent, but it left many heavy users wanting more.

The Droid RAZR MAXX doubles the battery of the Droid RAZR, up to 3300mAh. This is a major jump in battery power, and cetainly a worthwhile upgrade — even if it is a cut to the original RAZR owners.

Droid RAZR MAXX – 2mm Thicker, 2X the Battery Life

The Droid RAZR MAXX is available form Verizon today for $299 on contract or $649 without a contract. You can also purchase the RAZR MAXX at Amazon for $199 (New Customers) or $229 (Existing Customers eligible for an upgrade).

Droid RAZR MAXX Unboxing Hands On Video

As you can see, the Droid RAZR MAXX looks practically the same as the Droid RAZR. Having held both the RAZR and RAZR MAXX, there is a slight difference in thickness and weight, but it is more than acceptable given the extended battery life.

The Droid RAZR MAXX is technically thinner than the iPhone 4S, but as you can see in the video above, the devices are so close it isn’t a major issue.

That’s the real sell here. Motorola was able to deliver a huge battery in a thin and attractive looking package. Thanks to numerous software battery enhancements, consumers have a long lasting 4G LTE option.

I’m currently working my way through the battery on the Droid RAZR MAXX, so I will be able to share more about how well it keeps a charge on Monday, but so far I am impressed with the size of the device and the meager battery use since I unboxed it this afternoon.

  • I purchased the Droid Razr just after launch, and been hearing alot of outcry from other who did the same. Personally, it doesn’t bother me too much. I can make it thru a 10 hour work day and only go down to about 70%…only because I don’t get opportunities to use it at work, so i leave it on airplane mode.

I understand how others feel cheated after just 2 1/2 months of the initial release of the Razr.

Kaiser Permanente Launches Mobile Android Health Record App

Posted by on January 27, 2012

Health plan Kaiser Permanente has launched an Android version of its electronic health record platform to allow patients to access their medical data on the popular Google-powered devices.

KP is a health insurer with member facilities in nine states and the District of Columbia, although it is concentrated in the western states of California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.

The Android application allows patients to view a portion of their health record as well as most lab tests. It also includes messaging capabilities, so patients can email doctors, book appointments and fill prescriptions directly from the native tool.

In addition, the app enables patients to search for KP medical facilities in their area using GPS functionality.

The full HealthConnect EHR platform stores patients’ records from hospitals, radiologists, laboratories and pharmacies. It also enables doctors to store data on bedside documentation, clinical decision support and bar codes for medication.

KP plans to follow up the Android app with an iPhone version in the next several months. Meanwhile, iPhone users can access a mobile-optimized version of KP.

Accessing personal health info on mobile devices can have a positive impact on members, said KP executives.

“The benefits of mobile extend beyond member engagement,” Philip Fasano, executive vice president and CIO of KP, said in a statement. “Mobile solutions can have a positive impact on health.”

In addition to health, using the mobile apps can also lead to improved relationships between doctors and patients, added Christine Paige, senior vice president of marketing and Internet services for KP, in a statement.

“Now we will extend our entire connectivity toolkit for patients through a mobile phone,” said Paige.

The new Android EHR app will be a “springboard” for additional mobile apps in the coming months, said Fasano.

As for security features, the mobile app includes secure sign-on and automatic sign-out if the KP site determines the user is inactive.

KP now has 9 million patients, the company reports. It announced its Android application on Jan. 24.

Other health IT vendors such as Epocrates offer mobile versions of their EHR application. In July 2011, it launched Epocrates EHR to enable practices of 10 or fewer physicians to access health records from the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and the Web. Epocrates also plans iPad and Android versions.

GE has an Advance-Mobile edition of its Centricity EHR platform for the Apple iPad, and another software developer, Drchrono, also offers an EHR app for iPads. The Drchrono app incorporates speech-to-text functionality.

Meanwhile, Microsoft now offers a Windows Phone 7 version of HealthVault, its personal health record application.

In July 2011, KP launched KP Locator for iPhone, which allows patients to find a facility in the KP health system using the Apple device’s GPS feature. The company also offers an app called Every Body Walk to encourage walking and fitness activity.

“There has been an explosion in the growth of mobile devices, and users are looking for new and improved ways to manage their lives online,” said George Halvorson, chairman and chief CEO of KP, in a statement. “It is time to make health information easily accessible from mobile devices.”

Motorola hopes a ridiculously big battery will improve Droid Razr

Posted by on January 27, 2012

Last October, Motorola Mobility unveiled the 4G Droid Razr, the Android-powered smartphone that combined Motorola’s strongest phone brand names in a single device. When the device went up for sale in November, it faced some negative reviews because of its weak battery life.

To remedy this, Motorola today released the Droid Razr Maxx, which is essentially the Droid Razr with a much bigger battery.

How much bigger, you ask? 85 percent bigger.

The original Droid Razr had a 1780 mAh Li-Ion battery, capable (on paper, at least) of 750 minutes of talk time and up to 205 hours of standby time. The Droid Razr Maxx has a 3300 mAh Li-Ion, capable of up to 21.5 hours of talk time and 380 hours of standby time. Motorola says it has the “longest battery life of any 4G smartphone.”

But the value of such a large battery at this very moment is questionable due to a couple of factors.

Firstly, Betanews Managing Editor Joe Wilcox and I both have the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, a 4G Android smartphone with an 1850 mAh battery, and both of us have found the battery life to be extremely impressive. Even with 4G connectivity turned on, making a normal work day’s worth of phone calls, both of us can regularly get 18 hours of usage out of the Galaxy Nexus. This could be due to the energy management features in Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) which are not present in Gingerbread, the version of Android that the Droid Razr and Razr Maxx both run.

Fortunately, Motorola says an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade is available for the Razr Maxx, so we will be able to see how differently the device behaves under the new operating system.

Second, there is the potential heat problem. As any smartphone owner knows, these devices can get really hot under the proper circumstances. Android phones that have third party apps dealing out packets in the background tend to heat up quite a bit when mobile signals are scarce.

The Droid Razr Maxx has the double whammy of being one of Motorola’s thinnest devices and having one of the industry’s largest batteries. Those two factors add up to make a device that is very susceptible to heat-related issues.

The Droid Razr Maxx is available through Verizon Wireless today for $299 with a two-year service contract.
